Overview
Background
Chiara is Professor in Veterinary Pathology at the School of Veterinary Science (SVS) of the University of Queensland (UQ). She is a board certified specialist veterinary pathologist (Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Pathology), graduated with a DVM from the University of Teramo (Italy) in 2002 and a PhD in Ultrastructural Pathology in 2006. Before joining UQ in 2012, she has been working as an Assistant Professor in Veterinary Pathology at the University of Teramo (Italy). She has a specific research interest is small animal oncology, in particular canine prostate cancer, and veterinary oncoepidemiology. She is Chair of the canine prostate cancer subgroup at the Oncology Pathology Working Group (OPWG), co-coordinator of the Global Initiative for Veterinary Cancer Surveillance (GIVCS) committee for the establishment of international standards of veterinary cancer registration and team leader of the comparative oncology theme of the Queensland Alliance of One Health Science. She is also member of the board of the Veterinary Cancer Guidelines and Protocols (VCGP) group, member of the Oncology Committee of the World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA) and chair of the ESVP/ECVP DEI task force. She is past President of the Australian Society for Veterinary Pathology and, within UQ SVS, she has been postgraduate coursework coordinator (2014-2017), HDR coordinator (2017-2019) and Director of Research (2019-2021). She is now coordinator of the UQ SVS veterinary pathology postgraduate training program. She has received several academic awards, including SVS awards for research excellence (2017, 2021), best lecturer (2021, 2022, 2023, 2024), and UQ award for excellence in HDR supervision (2020). She has published more than 120 papers on international journals, 3 book chapters and numerous abstracts in proceedings of national and international conferences. She has > 15 years expertise in veterinary diagnostic pathology, histopathology, IHC and TEM in multiple species. Since her first academic appointment in 2005, she mentored several postgraduate and undergraduate students in diagnostic investigation of animal cancer and research in canine oncology. Although outside the field of comparative oncology, she also a unique expertise in avian pathology and transmission electron microscopy.

Pathogenesis of prostate cancer in dog, used as animal model for the spontaneous disease in men
The work of my research group has had impact in terms of understanding the mechanisms leading to this highly malignant tumour and is attracting considerable global interest, through invited presentations, requests for collaborations and reviews. Under my leadership, canine prostate cancer subgroup of the Oncology Pathology Working Group has established the first international consensus on the classification of prostatic lesions and prostate cancer in dogs, now adopted by the international community of veterinary pathologists for diagnostic and research.

Comparative oncology
Co-investigator on the successful application to the ACRF (Australian Cancer Research Foundation) for the establishment of a cutting-edge facility for Molecular Imaging agents in cancer in domestic animals at the Centre for Advanced Imaging (CAI). Studies on canine prostate cancer and canine osteosarcoma - invaluable models of human cancers.
-
Avian pathology
Although outside the field of comparative oncology, I have a unique expertise in avian pathology, gained through a training placement at the California Animal Health and Food Safety Laboratories in Tulare (California) in 2009. Since then, I have been actively collaborating with Prof. HL Shivaprasad (UCDavis, California) on investigating infectious and non-infectious diseases of poultry, pet birds and wild birds, with 13 publications (> 100 total citations) and several conference presentations to date. My expertise in avian histopathology is also supporting the research portfolio of Prof Eugeni Roura (QAAFI) and his research team to study peri-hatching strategies to endure enteric pathogens in broilers, a 4-year grant funded by Agrifutures. This collaboration has led to the multi-institutional partnership for the development of a consortium on precision feeding in broiler chickens

Veterinary cancer surveillance
• Since 2018, I am the Australian representative of the Global Initiative for Veterinary Cancer Surveillance (GIVCS), an international organisation aiming to standardise veterinary cancer coding and develop a veterinary cancer atlas as a reliable monitoring and surveillance tool for the development of cancer control plans and identification of risk factors. I am co-leading the development of the first guidelines for veterinary cancer registration that will be adopted worldwide to collect accurate and complete cancer data that can be used for cancer control and epidemiological research. • I am leading the development of a nationwide data asset of animal cancer data, the Australian Companion Animal Registry of Cancer (ACARCinom), funded by the Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) in collaboration with veterinary pathologists, oncologists and epidemiologists from the University of Sydney, University of Adelaide, Murdoch University and James Cook University, as well as veterinary pathologists from the two major commercial veterinary pathology laboratories (Gribbles, Idexx).
