Overview

Background

Peter Cabot is the Professor and Head of School in the School of Pharmacy. He joined the School staff in this position in 1999 after completing postdoctoral positions at Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore USA, The NIH, Baltimore USA and within the School of Pharmacy at UQ.

The primary focus of my research is on the elucidation of the peripheral mechanisms involved in analgesia associated with inflammation. Key discoveries were made in this field that highlighted the importance of the immune system in inflammatory pain. The results of which were published in the notable journals; JBC, PAIN, Nature Medicine and The Journal of Clinical Investigation.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Applied Science, Charles Sturt University
  • Doctor of Philosophy, The University of Queensland

Research interests

  • Opioids in inflammation

In the area I work as a translational scientist, exploring drug discovery of novel opioids and inflammatory mechanisms as well as developing new alternatives, paring this with translational work into preclinical and clinical studies looking for better outcomes for patients.

  • Biotransformation of Opioids in Disease

  • Pain in Inflammatory Diseases

  • Natural Products Drug Discovery

Research impacts

Our current research is focussed on novel opioid ligands that target opioid receptors aligned with less addictive properties, bioactivity of endogenous and natural products that may provide insights into better pain therapy or reduction in inflammatory disorders such as sinusitis.
